The good: the side tank is handy and it makes great ice. The bad: I had it for about 9 months and it started screaming when making ice. After trying everything (descaled it 3 times, moved it away from everything so it could breath), it still did it. So got a replacement since it was still in warranty. The new one started doing the same thing, this time after only 1 month, and past the warranty period. So now I'm just going to live with it making it's noises until it dies I guess. It still makes good ice, ugh.

Overall good (not great) unit. Scheduling ice maker is great. The taste is great. Quantity is great. However, the clean and sanitize reminders need work. My water is hard but the county filters it and so do I. It seems the reminders are based upon worst case scenario which I do not believe I am, so I find the reminders annoying. They should be resettable or schedulable based upon the water characteristics. In my case once per month is acceptable just like the coffee maker.

Overall the nugget ice maker is amazing! Only downside I would say is that when the tray is full. Eventually the ice would kind of melt but if the tray had better insulation of some sort to keep the ice nice and cold while it™€™s full that would be more amazing. But overall it™€™s amazing and my whole family loves it. Once it starts making the ice it makes it fast!

Not as good as older Opal Models

I had one of the earliest models of the Opal and have noticed this Opal 2.0 produces ice that is less of a nugget and more of a loose packed bit of ice and snow type ice. Disappointing! It does make "ice" but is so substandard that it melts nearly immediately in drinks compared to the nugget ice my older Opal produced.

This is a piece of junk! The first one that I bought started squeaking and squealing and shrieking before I had to stop using it. With what I thought was regular cleaning, it started making this horrible squealing noise pretty much everyday a couple of times a day, I called and found out that they wanted me to clean it a little more. It didn't work and it burned itself out. I had warranty on it and they sent me a refund in order so that I could purchase a second one. I purchased a second one, and within a matter of a few months it started doing the same thing. When I called customer support, the representative told me that it needs to be deep cleaned with bleach every 25 hours of use. Now this really irritates me, because this is a countertop permanent style appliance, not something that you want to just go picking up and you know moving around as it is quite large. This isn't one of those cheap portable units. It's meant to sit on your counter for regular daily use. So as the representative explained to me, that you need to run bleach through the unit and go through all these steps to clean it so that it won't squeak. Squeak is of course an understatement. She took me through the steps and we thoroughly cleaned it. In fact trying to be a no or very achiever I cleaned it several times. Now mind you, once you run the bleach through the thing you're going to taste bleach in your eyes no matter how well you drain it for a while. Imagine running bleats to your machine every single day so your eyes always tastes like bleach no matter how well you've tried to clean and drain the bleach out of your machine. All of this, fix the problem for about a week. The machine started making the noise again. It appears that I am going to have to wait for the manufacturer's year warranty to expire so that I can get service from the extended warranty that I bought who really has time to do a deep clean with bleach in the multi-step rants and repeat ransom repeat ranson repeat every single day for their near $500 countertop ice maker. Since this is two in a row for me, with some time between, I can see that the company has knowingly continue to produce a bad product and then just change their recommended maintenance cycle quietly to cover their butts. So I would recommend this only to my worst enemies.

I purchased this machine July 2025 and as of May 2026 I had to utilize my warranty three times. The noises that came out of the unit were ridiculous, but what was more ridiculous was the sexism I received from the last customer support rep. I ended up getting the third machine and it was upgraded to the newest one but only time will tell on its quality. I do like the upgraded features such as the metal ice scoop and the holder. Sadly, the warranty only follows the original machine which goes out July 10. If it breaks, I will be switching machine brands. The capacity and size is great, the look is fabulous, but the quality of the inner components are trash. One vinegar descale should not eat the parts. I have city water, whole house filtering. I sanitize weekly, and descale on schedule according to zone specifics. The machine should not wear out as fast as it does.

It's been running constantly for about 3 weeks now. Makes lots of ice, just fine. But last week it started screaming like a banshee! Seems a lot of people experience this. Most say "oh use distilled water." Yeah, no. I have a whole house filtration system and a water softener - if it has mineral scale already, then this thing is a real piece. So the noise is disappointing. The mating whale song is annoying at 3am. Good thing you can turn it off with the app. Buyer beware.

Known issues, challenging customer service

The Opal Icemaker worked well at first, but within a couple of days the problems started- issues that are well-documented if you search for other users' experiences. The ear-piercing squealing has been ongoing, forcing us to keep the machine off while we deal with customer service, a process that is still unresolved. Customer service acknowledged this is a known, common issue with these machines, which raises the question: why not fix the root cause before shipping them to customers? After back-and-forth communication, the burden remains entirely on the customer, without so much as an acknowledgment of the inconvenience. The next step we've been given is a live tech support call, which is an enormous time commitment. People have jobs and other obligations, and that shouldn't be the cost of owning a product at this price point. This has been a frustrating experience, to say the least.

Worked great for three days then a very loud squirming grinding sound started Wasn™€™t out of water. Shut it down checked all the hoses turned back on ran for about four hours making ice then the sound started again. Took it back for an exchange we are in day three of the second one but it won™€™t go into Bluetooth mode so that I can set up a schedule with the mobile app. Very disappointed was willing to pay the extra money to get this design as it worked perfectly in our kitchen space. I will be taking it back and will try another brand. But not GE.

The Opal 2.0 icemaker makes great ice! After the learning curve of set up, cleaning, etc it was good to go. Once the icemaker was filled to capacity it quieted down which I appreciated. I do wish the sales person had told me this machine needs to be cleaned every two days, to me this is very inconvenient because the hoses on the back of the machine are not long enough to reach the sink and to move the heavy machine every time? IDK I may not have purchased this if I had been given the full disclosure. So I would give 5 stars if it were easier to maintain.

This is the third opal nugget machine that I have owned. The other two were the basic model with side tank. I love the New model with the sanitizer and the better filter. I live in Florida and the water here is so bad! So having that sanitizer that I can run at least once a week is great on top of the normal cleaning function.

This is an outstanding ice maker in terms of production and quantity. It has a couple useful alarms. What it does not have is an alam that indicates the ice making is stalled because air has gotten into the pump, creating the noise referred to in Amazon reviews. Also, the ice maker can get low inside while there is water still inside the side tank. The side tank should have the ability to fill from the top. In its current edition, it is a bit laborious. The design is excellent except it would be nice to be able to fill the inside tank easily after cleaning/descaling to the indicated lines in the tank. There needs to be instruction on priming the pump, which I learned from customer support. With all that said, it i s great machine that I will use all the time.

2nd Review, Appliance Makes Terrible Sounds

We purchased this appliance in January 2026. This is our second GE Opal Ice Maker, the first maker squealed and leaked water in the interior of the appliance. We have been following all cleaning and descaling directions from the GE instruction manual verbatim and as prompted by the appliance. We have used only filtered water for filling, cleaning and descaling. The filter has been replaced with a GE filter. The appliance makes sounds as if the moving parts and gears are consuming themselves. Attached video.
